Introduction
A beautiful lawn is the pride of many New Zealand homes, but winter can quickly turn a green oasis into a muddy, yellowing patch of ground. Between heavy rain, morning frosts, and reduced sunlight, your grass needs a helping hand to survive the dormant season.
At STIHL SHOP Tauranga, we believe a great lawn starts with smart winter protection.
Don't Walk on Frozen Grass
The most important rule for a frosty lawn: Keep off the grass. When the blades are frozen, they become brittle. Walking on them causes the plant cells to rupture, leading to black or yellow footprints that can take months to recover. Wait for the frost to melt naturally before letting the kids or pets out to play.
The Danger of Damp Debris
Leaves and organic matter might seem like a natural blanket, but they are actually a hazard.
- Smalts Sunlight: Grass still needs light, even in winter.
- Traps Moisture: A layer of wet leaves creates the perfect environment for fungal diseases and rot.
- Encourages Moss: Damp, shaded areas are where moss thrives and eventually outcompetes your grass.
Use a leaf blower or a rake to keep your lawn clear throughout the winter months.
Winter Mowing Tips
If you do need to mow (usually because of a mild week), follow these rules:
- Raise the Blades: Keep the grass a bit longer than usual (about 4-5cm). This provides more surface area for photosynthesis and protects the roots.
- Wait for Dry Ground: Never mow a sodden lawn. You will compact the soil and cause "scalping" which damages the crown of the grass.
A little bit of protection during the cold months goes a long way. By respecting the frost and keeping the surface clear, you'll ensure your lawn is the first to bounce back when spring arrives.
